Demon

If you were born on June 16th, you could be the living embodiment of the Bible’s ‘Beast’, a.k.a. the ‘Anti-Christ’. People have been taught for centuries that the number 666 is the ‘number of the beast’ from the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, but researchers say that new evidence proves it was 616. While many Bible footnotes already admit the number translated from the original Greek could be 616, experts say Continue reading »

Gaza's Khan Younis ZooTake Your Kids To The Creepiest Zoo In The World - Gaza’s Khan Younis Zoo

So, what do you do when you are very good person, who is caught in a very bad situation with a bunch of really rare and exotic animals? Well, a visit to the Khan Younis (South Forest Park) Zoo in the Gaza strip will give you the answer. On first glance, you will see all kinds of animals. But, upon closer inspection, you’ll realize that over half of them are not alive.

In fact, they are animals that had died and then were stuffed and displayed to keep zoo visitors entertained. Sure, it’s a little creepy, but the zoo really had no choice. They can’t afford to get new animals across the border, don’t want to smuggle them illegally, and Continue reading »

Barber Pole Sign
The late Bill Marvey, one of the world’s last remaining manufacturers of barber poles, said a pole painted with red and white stripes (for blood and bandages) was an advertisement to potential patients. Bill explained that the early symbolism of the barber pole goes back to the Middle Ages.

In addition to cutting hair, barbers pulled teeth, let blood, used leeches and lanced boils. When they hung their bandages out to dry, the wind would twist the red and white together. Thus started the stripes. If a person needed Continue reading »

Here are some real court cases that show just how bazaar our legal system really is.

In the west we like to think our style of justice system is one of the most open and fair in the world, in many ways it is allowing people from all walks of life to come forward and have their cases heard, giving “the little guy” a chance to stand up against big corporations. Sometimes however, just sometimes, it can seem like this system gets a little abused.

This is not the first article in The Northern Star to cover some of the more frivolous law suits to be heard, but these cases still keep coming, and still have the ability to shock and bemuse. So without further a-do, here is a new list of some of the most ridiculous law suits to be heard in court.

The $54 Million Dollar Trousers

You may have already heard of the Stella awards, the awards doled out by Colorado writer Randy Cassingham for the most frivolous law suits. Between 2002 and 2007, the Stella awards were given annually to Continue reading »

Manilla's North Cemetery
They Aren’t The Living Dead – They Live With The Dead At Manilla’s North Cemetery.

Graveyards in the Philippines city, Manila, can be a little shocking to first-time visitors. Instead of the usual eerie emptiness of cemeteries, they are more like small towns. Mausoleums, once monuments of memory, now house general stores selling candy, candles, sardines, noodles and essential items. There’s even prepaid cards for cell phones available. Food and drink is served in restaurants lined up between the graves.

The walls are scaled with makeshift ladders, helping inhabitants to get in Continue reading »

Netherlands artist Redmer Hoekstra-2Netherlands artist, Redmer Hoekstra, does illustrations that have viewers doing double and triple takes. Following the ancient First Nations ‘spirit within a spirit’ technique, his art is reminiscent of M.C. Escher.

At first glance, his images look like simple animal drawings, but on second look, and trust me, you WILL take a second look, you’ll realize that there are human shapes and appendages artfully hidden in the incredible works of art. Female feet become an elephant’s tusks, a ballerina’s torso become its trunk and a leg is contorted to resemble the ear.

Hoekstra is a masterful illustrator Continue reading »

Wow, as if the police didn’t have enough to worry about already, now the Gregg Group has created the Kill Shot camera, that’s both shaped, and used, just like a rifle. Their thinking was that taking a photograph could be as accurate as firing a gun.

Now, there will so much more to photograph when you use the Kill Shot camera to take the kids’ pictures at the park. Exciting things, like screaming families fleeing, police vehicles, helicopters, swat teams, reporters and Continue reading »

BEK Phenomenon - Black Eyed ChildrenBEK Phenomenon, black eyed children, are being reported around the world. The strange phenomenon was supposedly first reported by journalist Brian Bethel on January 16, 1998. According to Bethel, two boys approached his parked car. He said they were stylishly dressed, olive skinned kids. The boys asked for a ride home, saying that they’d forgotten their money. Bethel refused, then noticed their “coal black” eyes and left.

However, in 1991, near Campbellton, New Brunswick, a witness and his Continue reading »

cabbage patch dollThe 1980s ushered in the arrival of one of dolldom’s biggest success stories ever, and one of the most sought after toys of its time, Cabbage Patch Kids. The world fell in love with the charming chubby-cheeked, beady-eyed cuddelicous creations, and craved them to the tune of millions and millions.

Most kids outgrew their fondness for their fabric friends over time, but not Pat and Joe Prosey, who are proud “parents” to over 5,000 Cabbage Patch Kids. They’ve now spent over Continue reading »

lab beakersA Dutch scientist, Mark Post, has potentially found a solution to a major source of greenhouse gas, and a way to keep grills lined with thick, juicy burgers and tender barbecued steaks. Post’s process relies on using stem cells being extracted from cattle, and then grown in biovats using lab grown multiplying cells to create artificial meat.

If Post has his way, meat will be produced without the need for cows, which means a Continue reading »

It was a warm summer night in the Slocan valley. The low clouds blocked out the usually bright starlight. The darkness was complete. We could feel but not see the embracing columns of mountains on each side of the valley and the river. Following the trail of the old rail line whose iron had been reclaimed six decades before “for the war effort”, we were guided by the barren gravel and ties that still resisted the encroachment of nature even in this lush woodland. The dark night brought no fear. It was warm, familiar and comfortable, and our destination was only a kilometer away. Then we noticed them.

Back in 1997, Lauren and I were visiting Alfie, her son, who had been living with a group of friends in this unspoiled Rocky Mountain paradise for a couple of years now.

Lauren would have been well received by the young crowd as just Alfie’s mom, but her psychic abilities and her natural gift for Continue reading »

While studying satellite images of eleven Antarctica ice shelf lakes that were captured between 2001 and 2010, glaciologist Doug MacAyeal, at the University of Chicago, and student researcher, C.H. LaBarbera, noticed unusual movement by bodies of water.

The mysterious phenomenon involves a set of teardrop-shaped lakes in Antarctica that move along up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) per day. The lakes all sit on top of Antarctica’s George VI ice shelf, a Continue reading »
