LongboardingWhen it comes to sports, no one’s too old or too young to try to enjoy its perks and benefits. Longboard, for one, has been a great outlet for adrenaline junkies who seek the thrill of speed and balance. Never mind the look that people give when they see a grown man carrying around a dirty board in the street. After all, not everyone can understand the euphoria of downhill bliss and the rush that you get when you ride against the wind. Longboarding, however, can cause serious injury when proper precautions are not observed. For a fun and safe adventure, here are Continue reading »

Let’s say you’ve got a few seasons worth of hunting under your belt, and going after your regular deer, moose, turkey, and waterfowl just doesn’t do it for you anymore. If you’re not quite up to the challenge of castrating flies with your rifle or bow yet, you can try one of the following to get your pulse up.

Spot and Stalk Wild Boar With a Bow

This one’s for the bow hunters. No feeders or night lights here, just you, your bow, and your quarry, though if you’re hunting in an unfamiliar area you should of course get a guide. Early morning or late afternoon and twilight are best since the hogs forage for food and water at around this time. There are a number of vital nuances here that you Continue reading »

When you’re looking at gokarts, it’s not a “one-size-fits-all” when you get to the shop. It’s also not a “one-style-fits-all,” either. When you have, say, and eight-year-old versus a twelve-year-old, you need to look at the safety of the karts for each child. An older child can handle a stronger, larger kart than can the younger child. Different karts also have different capabilities and you don’t want to put your younger child at risk of harm by putting him in a kart that is intended for sand dunes or riding trails. You’ll be paying out some cash for the karts you’re buying, so make sure that what Continue reading »

New Year’s is the usual time for resolutions, but we think spring is really the best time to do it. While the hangovers and extra poundage from all the booze and eating might be enough to inspire us to  make all those lists, revving up our moribund bodies in the cold of winter and getting things done is another thing entirely.

Spring on the other hand – it’s when the earth defrosts in the Northern Hemisphere and going out doesn’t involve layers of swaddling. A sharp contrast to waddling out just to shovel snow off the driveway.

To celebrate the the return of sunny days and new growth, we suggest people go all out on the personal growth resolutions and make a commitment to change by doing something that’s really out of their comfort zone. We’d like to challenge people to think big, think outside the box, and put some check marks on that bucket list, so we’ve picked five activities that will Continue reading »

Fishing

Freshwater fishing’s economic impact has grown to over $500 million dollars a year in direct spending, and this economic activity is spread across all regions of the province. Participation in freshwater fishing is also growing and predictions are the trend will continue, according to the results of the just-released 2013 BC Freshwater Sport Fishing Economic Impact Report. The report also highlighted potential for future growth – and showed that reinvestment of fishing licence revenues in BC’s stocking, conservation and angler outreach programs is Continue reading »

extreme ironingThe sport of extreme ironing was born in 1997, when the British mountaineer, Phil (Steam) Shaw, was uncertain whether to stay home and do laundry, or go climbing, so he did both. As a joke, he knocked off a few shirts at the summit, having toted his ironing board and iron with him. Word (and photographs) of the stunt spread quickly, and now the “Extreme Ironing Board” (the sport’s governing body) has branched into several countries. Today, entries still flood in, from ironing on kayaks to underwater, to bicycling and hang gliding. Extreme cloth flattening seems to be a growing fad.

Babe Ruth and Lou GehrigIn an exhibition game to kick off the ball season, a young pitcher named Jackie Mitchell, struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, and did it with only six pitches. Such a feat would have normally launched a future as a huge star in baseball’s big leagues, but the hurler was never even invited to try out for the major leagues. You see, Jackie Mitchell was a girl.
