It was a cold winter’s day. The parking lot to the office was filling up quickly. As a secretary got out of her car she noticed that a group of people, who had come to be interviewed for a job, were whispering among themselves as they stared at a man laying up against the wall, outside the building. He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds, and a hat topped his head, pulled down so you could not see his face. He wore shoes that looked 30 years old, too small for his feet, and with holes in them that his toes stuck out.

The secretary assumed that the man was homeless, and asleep, so she walked by and through the doors of the office. She took the names of those being interviewed, led them into a waiting room and waited for the employer.

It wasn’t long before someone brought up the man laying outside. As people Continue reading »

Swan Heart
Imagine falling hopelessly in love with a person, but, to show your love for them, would have you arrested, beaten, jailed and possibly murdered. Well, it happened to two friends of mine, over forty years ago. Perhaps it was coincidence, though I suspect the hand of destiny was responsible, but my life became intertwined with these guys when we were all barely old enough not to be called ‘boys’. Continue reading »

Lonely boy

Shawn was gay. He had always been gay, and would remain so for the rest of his life. Which was about to end. Shawn planned to kill himself.

He was fifteen years old, and was so tired of the side-eyed looks, the whispers behind his back, and the open harassment that he had to endure every single day. The horrible irony of Shawn’s life was that he was a warm, caring and beautiful person, who would do anything, for anyone, at any time. But now, he’d come to really believe that no one truly cared for him. He had been beaten up at least once a year since he began attending school, and his teachers, who should have been Continue reading »

Dog sittingThunder cracked. Lightning flashed. The young mother could barely see the trees through the downpour. Her five-year-old son, Cody, was out there. She’d just called, and his friend had said Cody was on his way home, but he still hadn’t arrived. Now it was pouring rain.

She grabbed her raincoat and ran out the door. And there was Cody, coming up the driveway, beside a huge, old shaggy dog! The dog waited patiently on the porch while she dried Cody off Continue reading »

The days of noble men and women, people with honor, ethics and empathy aren’t over just yet, as proved recently in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In an act that restored faith in humanity to a lot of people, Howard Cooper, 83, recently sold his car dealership, and as a way of thanking his employees, he gave each of them $1,000 for every year they worked for him. Howard sold the Howard Cooper Import dealership to Ohio-based Germain Motor Co., with Cooper maintaining an office at the dealership “until he’s ready to move on.” Cooper insisted that employee retention was part of the deal, but he still wanted to do something to thank his employees for his rewarding forty seven year career. “My employees are very important to me and the reason for my Continue reading »

Young and old hands

There was once an elderly, despondent woman who lived in a nursing home. She wouldn’t speak to anyone, nor did she ever request anything. She merely existed – rocking in her creaky old rocking chair.

The old woman didn’t have any visitors, however, every couple of mornings, a concerned and wise young nurse would come into her room. She didn’t try to speak to her, or ask any questions. She simply Continue reading »

Coffin

One day, the employees of a large company returned from their lunch break, and were greeted with a large sign on the front door. The sign said, “Yesterday, the person who had hindered your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral in the gym.” At first, everyone was sad to hear that one of their colleagues had died, but they grew curious about Continue reading »

Eagles and ChickensOnce upon a time, high upon a steep mountainside, there was an eagle nest with four large eggs inside. One day, an earthquake caused one of the eggs to roll out of the nest, and all the way down to a chicken farm, located in the valley far below. The chickens adopted and protected the eagle egg as one of their own, and eventually, a beautiful eagle was born. Being chickens, they raised the eagle as a chicken.

The eagle loved his home and family, but its spirit cried out for more. One day, the eagle looked to the skies above, and saw a group of Continue reading »

ManHis name was Bill. He had wild hair, wore a T-shirt with holes in it, blue jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. Bill was actually brilliant. He was kind of esoteric, with an IQ right off the charts. He became a Christian while he was attending college. Across the street from the campus was a very conservative church, which had wanted to develop a ministry to the students, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. One day Bill decided to go there.

He walked in wearing jeans, a tattered T-shirt, wild hair and no shoes. The service had already started, but the church was completely packed and he couldn’t find a seat. So Bill went searching. By now the prim, proper and well-heeled congregation was getting a bit uncomfortable, but no one said anything. Bill got closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realized there were no seats, he simply Continue reading »

Mommy and BabyWhen you were 3 months old, she fed, bathed and changed you.
You thanked her by crying all night long.

When you were 1 year old, she taught you how to walk.
You thanked her by running away when she called you.

When you were 5, she bought you a new outfit for the holidays.
You thanked her by falling into a mud pudding.

When you were 10, she drove you to and from your friend’s places.
You thanked her by jumping out of the car, and never Continue reading »
