Inside Out | A Movie Review By Clifford T. Hofferd

Inside Out | A Movie Review By Clifford T. Hofferd

(Spoilers)

Inside Out is a 2015 computer animated film from Pixar Studios and Walt Disney Pictures.

Directed by Pete Doctor the film follows the emotions that live inside out heads. Specifically those of 11 year old Riley who has just moved to San Francisco because of her father’s work. Her emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger) all try to help guide her through this new experience. However due to an accident Joy and Sadness get lost in Riley’s mind and try to make their way back to headquarters before Riley loses her personality.

People need to see this movie. It is one of those important movies that only come along once every few years. The Story, the characters, the lessons learned. Everything here is important and everything here works so well that it made me (a grown man) cry. Anyone who has had to move away to another city and leave behind the things they love will appreciate this movie. Anyone who was told that they need to put on a brave face why they really want to break down in tears will love this movie. Anyone who doesn’t feel like they are valued as an equal by their peers will love this movie.

inside out movie

Anyone will love this movie because it feels real. It’s not about a genocidal robot out to destroy humanity. It’s not about a dinosaur theme park where things go horribly wrong, and it’s definitely not a rehash of an old action franchise that’s past its prime. It is real and it teaches you things. It speaks to you and it makes you think about how your emotions interact. It also teaches you that sadness is important. Without sadness people wouldn’t know what happiness is. Without sadness people wouldn’t know when someone needed help. They wouldn’t know that they were struggling. They wouldn’t know.

I give Inside Out 9.5 Core Memories out of 10
