Pooktre Art - Tree Shaping

Pooktre art, or Tree Shaping, is the practice of training living trees, and other woody plants, into artistic shapes and useful structures. It’s a unique form of artistic expression that involves coaxing trees into growing into specific shapes and forms. Started by Peter Cook and Becky Northey, a couple from Australia, Pooktre is a combination of the words “Peter” and “Cook.” The couple began experimenting with tree shaping in the late 1980s and have since gained international recognition for their remarkable creations.

The process of Pooktre involves training young trees by carefully bending and guiding their growth using various techniques such as pruning, grafting and tying. As the tree grows, it naturally conforms to the shape and structure set by the artist. Over time, intricate and elaborate designs can be achieved, ranging from simple geometric shapes to complex sculptures, furniture and even architecture.

Pooktre artists emphasize patience, creativity and a deep understanding of tree physiology to achieve their desired results. Each piece is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between the artist and the tree, as well as the inherent beauty and adaptability of nature.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Pooktre also promotes sustainability and environmental consciousness. By working with living trees, artists highlight the importance of conservation and respect for the natural world. Additionally, Pooktre creations serve as living art installations that continue to evolve and change with the passage of time, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of art and nature.

While Pooktre remains a niche art form, it has garnered interest and admiration from enthusiasts around the world. The whimsical and enchanting creations of Pooktre artists inspire wonder and appreciation for the wonders of the natural world, reminding us of the endless possibilities for creativity and expression found in the most unexpected places.
