False: Good news for all you chocoholics: Eating chocolate does not cause pimples. Skin care experts agree that acne is not caused by any specific food, including french fries, candy, soda or potato chips.
Probably the biggest myth of all is that eating greasy foods causes your skin to produce more oil. Greasy foods, while not good for your health, won’t cause oily skin or produce pimples. In fact, hormonal changes within the body have the greatest impact on acne. Predisposition toward oily skin is usually hereditary. So if your parents have oily skin, you probably will too.
Does Chocolate Cause Pimples?
The real causes of acne are overactive oil glands, genetics, dead skin cells lodged in skin pores, and hormonal changes. None of these factors are triggered by the foods that we eat. The sebaceous gland under the skin produces an oil called sebum, which travels up hair follicles taking off dead cells and then moisturizing the skin. Acne starts when the sebum oil gets trapped beneath the skin.
Avoiding chocolate won’t clear up your skin, but an overall healthy diet and lifestyle can.
