Will’s Thoughts – Why Professional Fighters Choose To Fight
The announcement that our community is soon going to host yet another professional fight, got me to trying to figure out why professional fighters fight, and why the public loves to watch them trying to bash in each other’s heads.
At first I thought it was because fighting represents the pinnacle of physical dominance, a brutal demonstration of the raw power of human over human. I reckon for men, it validates our ability to defend ourselves and protects our personal honour. For gals, maybe the attraction of fighting is also about establishing who’s Alpha, but it’s also about evaluating those with the best abilities to provide and protect. But ‘ability’ ain’t the real reason that men and women like to fight. It just has to be something else.
I then speculated about how a Cowboy’s manhood hinged on his ability to throw and take a punch, how fast he could draw a gun, and if he stood behind his word. For First Nations men, it was more about their prowess in hunting and fishing, fiercely defending their territory and unleashing rage in revenge. I need to include the ladies here too, for they also have fought with great valor throughout history, both as a woman against women, and as a man against men. No, I guess it ain’t just ‘need’ that makes a fighter want to fight either. So, what’s the reason?
While thinking about the motivation for men and women to want to beat, and be beaten, I got to wondering how long it’ll be before animal rights groups and environmentalists get their way, and by process of elimination, are forced to care more about humanity than boycotting beef or damaged dandelions? Every day more medical evidence is released about the severe brain damage being inflicted during fighting, so how long can it be before it’s outlawed? As a career choice, I figure fighting’s a poor one, for quality of life and longevity. But, the reason folks ‘want’ to fight remained elusive.
I thought back over the years, and most professional fighters that I’ve ever known were bullies in real life. Physical intimidation fed their egos, but it also exposed them as sensitive people hiding fears and vulnerabilities behind threats and acts of violence. But that’s not it, because some weren’t bullies, they were loving, considerate and caring people. And not all fighters choose to fight for a living because they’re less than intelligent. Some of the smartest folks I’ve ever known were also great fighters. So those reasons don’t work.
Last, is the possibility that a fighter fights because they are either ignorant about, or are in denial of, their own sexuality. I reckon that I might be onto something here! Hmmm … let’s see. Fighters are intelligent, sensitive, enjoy lots of ‘same sex’ contact, and just love the public’s attention. Yep, fighters might put on a macho image, but ask yourself this; What other sport lets the audience watch two extremely muscular people prancing around in a ring, wearing satin garments and gloves, grappling for a gaudy golden belt, and when the winner’s determined, they’re given a lovely purse?
