Thunder cracked and lightning flashed. The young mother could barely see the trees through the downpour. Her five-year-old son, Cody, was out there. She’d just called and his friend had said Cody was on his way home, but he still hadn’t arrived. Now it was pouring rain.
She grabbed her raincoat and ran out the door. And there was Cody, coming up the driveway beside a huge, old shaggy dog! The dog waited patiently on the porch while she dried Cody off inside. “The thunder was scary,” Cody said, “but that big dog came and walked home with me, so I wasn’t scared no more. I named him Gabriel.”
“Now you go get some dry clothes on while I fetch Gabriel some food,” she said. As she put some food scraps into a bowl, she thought, ‘If Gabriel’s a stray, then he’s just found a home! Every child needs a guardian angel, after all’.
But, when she stepped back out on the porch, the huge old dog had vanished into the storm. Cody came out and took her hand as she tried to peer out into the tempest. “I guess Gabriel’s gone,” she whispered. Cody said, “It’s okay, Mommy, God probably sent him to help someone else.”
