Will’s Thoughts – Do angels exist? Are they real? YES!
I reckon that this is the one time of year when people think and talk about angels, more than at any other time of year. There’s always been a ton of debate about whether the divine creatures even exist, and if so, what they look like, and do down here on Earth. I’d be willing to bet that there ain’t a heap of angels sighted outside of hospitals and hospice homes, because most folks think of them as beautiful glowing creatures with white wings and halos, singing a cappella as part of a ten trillion part harmony. Well, I’m here to tell you angels do exist. But they don’t look like you think they should. In fact, I saw two of them the other day. The first one was outside of a mall.
Beside the entrance, stood a young lady softly ringing a bell next to a ‘kettle’, trying to raise money for our less fortunate. Her spiked blue hair, nose stud and multiple earrings put most people off, until they looked into her eyes, which were wiser, kinder and more considerate than words can begin to describe. While all her friends sipped designer coffees and shopped, she stood out there enduring the cold, both from the looks people gave her, and the weather. She was aware of the stereotype that people labelled her with, yet she greeted every soul with a smile and warm hello. Every time that anyone dropped a dollar or two into that kettle, I swear that girl began to glow! I dashed into the store and got what I needed, but when I came out, she was gone. In her place was a man, whom I suspect was also an angel.
Sometimes it’s real hard to spot them, because they’re so good at disguises. The next one sure wasn’t equipped with a white robe or wings. I spotted her in the isle of a grocery store. She was wearing a faded, long thin coat, not well suited for winter weather. Her clothing was well worn, and probably older than my grown-up son. While she didn’t have a halo, her white hair sparkled when the light hit it, and her smile radiated pure joy. As impatient people pushed past her, she shuffled slowly along in old scuffed up shoes, pushing her cart as she carefully shopped. I knew that she was an angel, when at the checkout, she began dividing her purchases into three small piles. She apologized to me for doing so, but explained that she was buying food for two other senior citizens, who couldn’t make it out in the bad weather. Though I’m normally a self-centered jerk, I told her to just take her time. After all, it just ain’t everyday that one gets to see an angel in action.
The ancient cherub squinted through her thick glasses as she counted out the last of her change to pay for the groceries. After carefully packing her purchases, she picked up the half empty plastic bags and started for the doors. But, before she went out, she stopped and quietly placed a few cans of food into a local food bank’s bin. Then, while I watched, she walked out into the swirling snow and vanished. As the clerk rang up my items, I stood there wondering if that sweet old angel had gotten into a car, or if she had flown back to her heavenly home. Nope, I reckon there ain’t nobody that can convince me angels that don’t exist, because I see them all the time.
